Mary-Louise Parker on playing a mother and being one too Feb 10, 2008

Mary-Louise Parker has said she drew on her own experiences as a mum to make her character in new film The Spiderwick Chronicles more believable.

Mary-Louise plays Helen Grace, the mum of faery-befrienders Jared, Simon and Mallory in the movie adaptation of the much loved children’s books and she said recently: “I hope I’m a better mother [than her character] in some ways, and I’d like to be as good as her in others.”

“I mean, every parent fails. That’s what I like about this character, she’s not perfect. She loses her temper, she’s impatient, she makes bad decisions like most parents.”

Mary-Louise is currently dating Grey’s Anatomy actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan but has no regrets about being a single mum: “I think about my children 25 hours a day. I think about my children as I walk in the door, so I don’ t think in terms of ‘oh if my life were…’ That’s not good for them. Your children suffer when you have one foot in the past.”

Celeb Q&A: Mary-Louise Parker Feb 01, 2008

Actress mom Mary-Louise Parker tells us about starring in The Spiderwick Chronicles, her favorite kids’ books, and more.

On Doing a Kids’ Movie

Has the end of Harry Potter left a big hole in your child’s reading list? Pick up The Spiderwick Chronicles, by Holly Black and Toni DiTerlizzi. Then see the live-action screen version, hitting theaters this month (rated PG). We chatted up actress and mom Mary-Louise Parker to find out about the film, her favorite kids’ books, and more.

Q. What attracted you to The Spiderwick Chronicles?
A. I’ve always wanted to do a kids’ movie, and this one is somewhat atypical — the characters are finely drawn and complex. Even though my kids won’t be able to see it for a few years [her son is 4 and her daughter is under 2], I have lots of children in my life who’d love to see me in a movie.

Mary-Louise Parker’s ‘Weeds’ buzzkill Jan 01, 2008

Wonder who Mary-Louise Parker isn’t too fond of on the set of “Weeds”?

She and on-again actor friend Jeffrey Dean Morgan enjoyed a cozy dinner at the West Village’s La Palapa just before Christmas. The couple - who split in the summer - announced their reconciliation when they showed up on each other’s arm at his ” P.S. I Love You” premiere earlier this month.

“They spent some time at the bar and then at the big booth next to us,” says a spy.

“Both seemed very nice, though it did sound like she was none too happy with someone on her show, saying they were lacking talent, and had a sense of entitlement.”

It couldn’t be a certain famous twin, now, could it?

Mary-Louise Parker nearly sets fire to house in Golden Globes joy Dec 23, 2007

Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker has revealed she was so surprised that she got a Golden Globe nomination last week that she nearly set her kitchen on fire.

She explained: “I was in the kitchen making breakfast for my kids. I was making waffles, which almost caught fire. I was on the phone for a long time and then I noticed it was really smoky.”

“It was kind of fun. My kids like it when the smoke alarm goes off. It’s loud, and exciting, and my son gets to pick up the broom and hit the ceiling with it.”

Mary-Louise has been short-listed in the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical TV show category.

Entertainers of the Year: 25 Top Stars of 2007 Nov 25, 2007

2007′S VALEDICTORIANS: THE CABLE QUEENS

Not long ago, if you said the phrase ‘’strong female character,” what you really meant was ”bitch.” Today however, you’d mean a powerful, complex figure who’s flawed but fascinating. The actress this description calls for doesn’t fit into any box ? except, at last, the TV. Glenn Close (FX’s Damages), Mary-Louise Parker (Showtime’s Weeds), Kyra Sedgwick (TNT’s The Closer), and Holly Hunter (TNT’s Saving Grace) (pictured, left to right) are four extraordinary film vets who have embraced the challenges of their latest provocative roles on the small screen. Here, a tribute to the leading women of cable. ?Ari Karpel

MARY-LOUISE PARKER, Weeds
”I think it just all thins out there the older you get.” Parker’s not talking hair, she’s talking movie scripts: There aren’t many offered to women in their 40s. Still, the primary reason she took the role on Weeds was that she’d recently had her first child and wanted steady hours. But don’t go thinking motherhood has dampened her resolve to push Nancy Botwin ? the devoted mom and suburban drug kingpin she plays ? to extremes. ”I want to take her as far as I can,” she says. ”I probably wouldn’t be able to take off my panties and put my stuff in Matthew Modine’s face on any other channel, y’know?”
